Fast Facts About Alice Birch
Alice Birch was born in Malvern in 1986, UK. She studied at the University of Exeter. Her graduation from University was followed quickly by her first full-length script, Little Light. In an interview with the Guardian, Birch explains that this priemer script has echoes of her own life. “Of course it’s fictional, but I wanted to write about sisters – that relationship can be so complicated. It’s an exploration of grief and of family; there’s something very particular about when families get together and tell stories about their past.”
Alice Birch and her sister grew up on a commune near Malvern called Birchwood Hall. Her parents were unmarried so they decided to name both their daughters "Birch.” The commune describes itself as "a left-wing and feminist group" on its webpage.
Awards include: George Devine Award (Revolt. She said. Revolt again); International Critic’s Prize (FIPRESCI Prize) at San Sebastian International Film Festival, Critic’s Choice Award for Best First Feature at Zurich Film Festival (Lady Macbeth); Arts Foundation Award for Playwriting.
Alice Birch works as a commissioned playwright for several theaters across the world including Royal Court Theatre, Schaubuhne Theater Berlin, and Comedie de Valence (France).
