"The language of rage is a language without a tongue"

 

The Nightingale is known for its tendency to sing through the night, and has thusly become a symbol for evading censorship. In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the story of Philomela is a tale of abuse, censorship and rage. After being raped by her sister's husband, Philomela is silence by her attacker who brutally cut out her tongue and imprisoned her in the woods. Using her skills in weaving, Philomela was able to send a message to her sister, Procne, who responded with a wordless rage. The two fled their home after killing Procne's son and feeding the child to the guilty king. The gods transformed Philomela to a nightingale and Procne became a swallow, two birds known for their beautiful and resilient voices.
